Purton is a village, about six miles from Swindon and 70 miles from London and is situated in the southern part of England.

TITHE BARN APRIL 2004	PURTON CHURCH SUMMER 1999

Purton is a small village of some 4,000 inhabitants, and has become over the years a dormitory village for Swindon, which provides most of the employment. It has a good variety of community life and involvement for most age groups.

Whilst most of the village is not very attractive, the area around Purton Church is a conservation area and most deservedly so. I have included a picture of the Church and Tithe Barn as an example.

The parish Church in Purton is one of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in the village. It is situated in a very old and picturesque area. The nave dates from the 12th century. Bonded into the south side of the chancel arch, is an odd capitol which probably belonged to an earlier building. The roof was raised by three feet in the 13th century.

Major changes occurred in the 14th century when the central tower and spire, and the chancel and chapels were added. In the 15th century the West tower was built on, making St. Mary's Church unique amongst English churches, in having central tower and spire as well as a Western tower.

Over the Christmas period (1999), a replacement painting has been hung in the Church to replace the original which was stolen, this has been painted by a local artist.

One of the paintings in Purton Church, which was stolen some five years ago, has just turned up in the United States. The painting, a 17th century masterpiece by a Flemish artist, is badly damaged, and has been recovered by Scotland Yard's art squad.

Over the Christmas period (1999), a replacement painting was hung in the Church to replace the original which was stolen, this was painted by a local artist.

This old steam engine, started life, at the turn of the century, in a Bournemouth laundry.
It was later bought by Hills Brickworks, and used in the brickworks during the period between 1955 - 1972, helping to turn out millions of bricks over this period.

This Bellis and Morcam steam engine has been restored by a local firm Holland Handling, and has come to rest outside the village hall as part of Purton's millennium celebrations.
Hills stopped producing bricks some 20 years ago after 100 years at Purton, and the area is now an industrial site.
